Town of Vibank
Waterloo to Calgary in a Cessna 150
Reading out town names along the roads of our map
sounds like a hodgepodge whirlwind tour through
Europe, reflecting the origins of various settlers:
Windhorst, Montmartre, Kendal, Odessa, Vibank.
Another road takes you through Esterhazy,
Stockholm, Killaly, Neudorf, Abernathy...
In the midst of such names, we might almost expect
the tall white gleaming building in the distance to be
a cathedral, but it turns out to be an icon of prairie
architecture: a grain elevator. This one has new silos
set up adjacent to the older structure.
Vibank seems to be arbitrarily planted in one of
the huge rectangles of land--not another
settlement in sight for many miles around!
It’s interesting that the streets are lined up
diagonally inside the rectangle.
Friday, July 11 - Leg 10: Brandon to Regina
